A shepherd in a blue coat walks a flock of pale goats down a shaded avenue of trees toward the light. The animals are little more than white dabs and dark legs, and the road is built from broad sandy strokes that pull the eye toward the bright opening ahead. The blue of the figure is the composition’s single saturated note, anchoring the drift of the flock.
