A crowd of dark-coated figures gathers outside a snow-laden house, one figure in bright red and a white horse standing among them against a pale mountainous backdrop. The painting is almost a study in value, silhouettes of black and white punctuated by the single red coat. The shallow, frieze-like staging and the muffling snow give the scene a folkloric, processional gravity.
