A grove of dark, round-canopied trees stands on pale, sandy earth criss-crossed by shadow, with sunlight pouring between the trunks. The palette is restrained to greys, ochres and dusky greens, and the light is the painting’s real subject. The handling is confident and plein-air in feeling.
