A sunlit strip of field and a dark road lead the eye toward a great blue mountain mass rising at the left. Warm ochres and pinkish scrub in the foreground give way to cool, shadowed slopes behind. The composition is built on that hot-cold contrast, lending the scene a late-afternoon clarity.
