A head-and-shoulders portrait shows an old man in a soft hat, a white beard flowing over a dark coat, a pipe held at the corner of the mouth. The face is built from loose, impastoed strokes in greens, ochres and violet greys, the beard left almost sculptural in its thick white marks. The weary downward gaze and wintry colour give the picture a powerful sense of season become mood.
