Patchwork of Pale Squares

The picture is composed entirely of rectangular patches of pale colour, greys, blush pinks, creams and blues, laid like a grid of swatches or window panes. Some bands are ruled with fine parallel lines, and a group of stronger blue rectangles clusters near the centre, giving the field its only real incident. The result is a quiet, cool abstraction about surface, repetition and restrained incident.
