Friend of a Friend

Catalogue note

A face emerges from a deep cobalt ground, its features lit in hot magenta, rose and pale yellow. The paint is soft and blended, giving the skin a luminous, almost cosmetic glow, while the dark hair and background recede into shadow. The subject looks straight out with an expression at once watchful and composed.
