A dark, near-black sea fills the lower canvas beneath a heavy sky, broken at the horizon by a single luminous, veiled patch of white where sun or moon shows through cloud. The brushwork is broad and atmospheric and the value contrast extreme. The picture turns on that one wound of light, giving the gloom a sudden, devotional intensity.
