Successive lines of breaking surf roll toward grey wet sand, a pale low island floating on the horizon beneath a soft, cloud-veiled sky. The sea is worked in layered horizontal bands of blue and white and the composition is calm and spacious. The restrained palette and repeating rhythms give the scene a lullaby-like stillness.
