A vast, bruising storm-cloud presses down on dark hills and a grey lake, a handful of tiny white houses the only sign of habitation. The composition is dominated by sky, the land reduced to a low dark band that anchors the weight above. It is a deeply Romantic image in which water is turned to pewter and human scale is made to feel very small.
