Cavalry in Snow

Catalogue note

A column of mounted riders in dark greatcoats and pale-plumed helmets moves along a snowbound road past a walled gateway and leafless trees. The palette is almost monochrome, grey-white snow and sky against the brown of the horses, and the paint is loose and directional. The receding line of riders and the muffling snow give the scene a cold, processional solemnity.
