A chestnut horse with a white blaze rears and turns toward the viewer, mane thrown up and hooves cutting into pale, dust-lifted ground. The animal is modelled in strong light and shadow, its muscled neck and shoulders built in warm browns against a muted grey-green field. The near-square framing and rearing pose give the portrait an urgent, high-spirited vitality.
