Iwo Jima in Red

A reworking of the Iwo Jima flag-raising floods the whole scene in blood-red, the marines rendered as dark, straining silhouettes on black rock. The familiar composition is skewed toward nightmare, the flag left in its true colours as the single exception. It reads as an unambiguous anti-war statement, heroism and horror collapsed into one gesture.
