Pale bodies, rendered almost as stone, twist together against a soft aquamarine ground across a large, loosely worked canvas. The modelling is light and chalky, the forms dissolving at the edges so that flesh, cloth and drapery merge into a single sculptural mass. The scale and unfinished intimacy of the picture are part of its effect.
