Catalogue note

On an unusually tall, narrow support, water is painted from saturated mid-ocean blue at the top down through green-white surf to a wash of foam at the base. The colour moves in a vertical gradation, so the panel reads as a column of sea, and the handling is loose and sweeping. Its extreme proportion gives the image the feel of a banner or door panel rather than a conventional easel painting.
