A bearded man in a wide-brimmed hat is drawn in thin, sweeping strokes over a pale ground, barely more than a sketch. The face is modelled in grey-green washes, the eyes and brow given the most definition, while the beard and hat brim dissolve into loose line. The effect is provisional and searching, closer to a study than a finished portrait.
