An elderly man with a white mane and beard fills the picture, his face painted in raw orange and rust against a mottled dark ground. The eyes are set deep and shadowed, giving the head gravity, and the loose, loaded strokes leave the beard and hair almost sculptural. The result is a strong, unidealised image of age.
