A close-cropped head of a bay horse dominates the picture, dark mane and blazed muzzle modelled in broad, wet strokes against a cool grey ground. The palette stays earthy, burnt sienna, umber and near-black, so the animal reads as weight and warmth rather than surface. The sharply darkened eye gives the study an unusually direct, almost human address.
